MILLBRAE, California. The eighteenth annual Festival of Songs and Dances presented by the San Francisco Bay Area Cultural Group, Inc. (SFBACG), will be taking place on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Mills High School in Millbrae, California. The 18th annual Festival of Songs and Dances is a musical concert featuring Filipino folk songs, cultural dances, and selections from Broadway musicals such as the King and I, Showboat, Sound of Music, Annie, My Fair Lady, Cats and more. The concert under the musical direction of Professor Mila Esguerra Edwards, features the SFBACG Adult, Junior, and Children’s Choirs; and Bay Area’s three Fil-Am Tenors. The SFBACG intends to promote Filipino musical culture, while benefiting the Immaculate Conception Church of San Francisco and Dr. Fe Del Mundo’s Tuberculosis Treatment for Children Hospital in the Philippines.
The Festival of Songs and Dances has continued to foster Filipino culture in the San Francisco Bay Area through music. The SFBACG, which is made up of Professor Mila Esguerra Edwards’ voice and piano students, remains as one of the few local groups whose musical revue revitalizes Filipino folk songs, kundiman, and harana music, while including the essence of American Broadway music. Through this annual concert and several guest performances, the SFBACG has benefited churches and organizations such as the Immaculate Conception Church, St. Boniface, St. Andrew’s, St. Joseph’s St. Timothy’s, North County San Mateo County Medical Center, Mission Hospice of San Mateo County. In the Philippines, the SFBACG has donated to the victims of Mount Pinatubo and Mayon Volcanos, Bantay Bata 163, Franciscan Sister of the Immaculate Conception in Quezon City, St. Michael’s Hospice (home for terminally ill patients), and many others.
The group has performed at fundraisers, social functions, church events, and Filipino Independence celebrations in the Bay Area. One of their major performances was welcoming Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the Davies Symphony Hall during her visit to San Francisco.
The San Francisco Bay Area Cultural Group invites everyone to an evening of music at their 18th Annual Festival of Songs and Dances on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 6:30pm at Mills High School, located at 400 Murchison Drive, Millbrae, CA 94030. Tickets are available for purchase at $15 and $25.
